WA’s agriculture and food industry promoted in China

WESTERN Australia’s innovative agriculture and food sector has been highlighted in China to support continued development of trade and investment opportunities.

Speaking at a public seminar organised by the Zhejiang Academy of Science and Technology in Hangzhou, Department of Agriculture and Food Director General Rob Delane outlined the consumer benefits of Western Australia’s food products.

“Clean, safe, healthy agrifood is so abundant in Western Australia that we often take for granted the many benefits we enjoy from foods grown in our State,” Mr Delane said.

“Western Australia’s clean production environment, different climate regions that enable the growth of a wide range of food, a world-class biosecurity system to protect agriculture from pests and diseases, modern supply chain infrastructure and food safety systems enable the supply of high quality food products and ingredients.

“World-class research institutions and innovative businesses also ensure access to, and application of, the latest science and technology.

“Combined, these advantages make Western Australia’s agrifood products and industry desirable to business in overseas countries such as China for trade and investment.”

Mr Delane said as the global population grew, Western Australia would be well placed to increase its supply of safe, high-quality foods to China and other export markets.

“Western Australia has long had strong ties with China, particularly with Zhejiang Province and this visit further illustrates the importance placed on our bi-lateral economic relationship,” Mr Delane said

“Last year, Western Australia’s total food exports fed more than 20 times our population and China was our largest agriculture, forestry and fisheries export market worth more than $1 billion.

“This State’s strong consumer focus on delivering the foods our customers want, and our collaboration with Chinese institutions on improving the performance of Western Australian agri-foods, is expected to lead to further trade and investment interest from China.”
