Ichthyologist

Study the structures, characteristics, functions, ecology and environments of fish to increase scientific knowledge and develop practical applications in wildlife management, conservation and farming.

Tasks

  • Investigate inter-relationships between fish and their environment by studying them in their natural surroundings, in captivity and in laboratories
  • Study and perform experiments to identify species and gather data on growth rates, nutrition, reproduction cycles, prey and predators
  • Devise methods of population control especially exotic and pest species
  • Develop programs to increase or manage the population of fish in captivity and the wild
  • Undertake surveys and preparing reports for management agencies
  • Prepare or supervise preparation of laboratory reports and scientific papers
  • Supervise and coordinate work of technical officers and technicians

An Ichthyologist requires a degree in science majoring in zoology or biological science. A suitable course is offered by most universities. Research scientist or academic usually requires a masters or doctorate degree in the chosen field.
