Horse Manager

Plan, organise, control, coordinate and undertake farm operations to breed and raise horses for competition, dressage, showjumping, riding for pleasure and work. 

Tasks 

  • Consult with veterinarians and animal nutritionists to ensure animal health and nutrition 
  • Keep records 
  • Purchase animals 
  • Undertake administrative tasks such as marketing, budgeting, planning and management of physical and financial resources 
  • Select animals for mating 
  • Mate mares with selected stallions 
  • Supervise and manage equipment, facilities, pastures and staff 
  • Assist with foaling 
  • Train apprentice jockeys and stable hands 
  • Organise exercise and care of animals 
  • Supervise training of horses for competitions 

Study Pathways 

Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with a bachelor degree or higher qualification. At least five years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualification. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).
