Apiarist or Beekeeper plans, organises, controls, coordinates and operates apiaries to produce honey, queen bee pollen, beeswax and royal jelly, breed queen bees and pollinate crops.
Tasks
- Raising bees to produce honey
- Ensuring availability of pollen and nectar for hives
- Moving hives to follow nectar and or provide pollination services
- Conducting routine hive inspections and maintain hives and all beekeeping equipment
- Arranging the purchase of queens, splitting hives and managing swarming
- Organising the sale, purchase and transportation of honey, bees wax and other bee related products
- Maintaining and evaluating records of hive activities, monitoring market activity and planning production accordingly
- Managing business capital including budgeting, taxation, debt and loan management
- May select, train and supervise staff and contractors
Study Pathways
At least five years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualification. In some instances, relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).
