The JB Fairfax Award for Rural Journalism is a national award that aims to encourage university students to pursue a career in rural or regional journalism upon graduation. The Award was established through a private donation from Mr John B Fairfax AO.

The Award includes a scholarship of  $10,000 and practical work experience as an intern Fairfax Media and the Sydney Royal Easter Show. The winning article is published in a major rural publication.

Applicants for the Award must:

1. Be enrolled to study in any undergraduate or postgraduate degree of relevance to rural affairs at an approved Australian education provider.

2. Submit a Feature article on one of the following topics:

  • Topic 1: How can Australian agriculture benefit from Brexit?

  • Topic 2: How could better digital connectivity in country areas invigorate rural economies?

  • Topic 3: How can fresh ideas from young producers lead to on farm gains?

The feature article must be up to 1,200 words, be written to publication standard and include a minimum of four information sources.

3. Submit a strong news article, blog post, video or audio report of up to 600 words on a topic of your choice relating to Australian agriculture. Please include a minimum of three sources including one primary producer. The piece must be original and not previously published or broadcast.

4. Demonstrate an active interest in rural affairs and in pursuing a career in rural journalism upon graduation.

5. Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

6. Be aged 30 years or under.
