Entomologist

Investigate causes of insect outbreaks and investigates methods of control through integrated pest management, biological control and chemical means.

Tasks

  • Identify species of insects both harmful and harmless to plants and animals
  • Undertake field surveys
  • Investigate role insects play in the environment
  • Develop techniques to control harmful insects and promote beneficial insects
  • Develop standards and regulations for enforcing plant and animal quarantine
  • Study distribution and habitat of insects

Qualifications

An Entomologist requires a degree in science majoring in entomology, biology or zoology available at most universities. Research scientists or academics usually require a masters or doctorate degree in the specialist field.
