School closer to offering ag business degree

Former students of Western Australia’s only tertiary agricultural institution say moves for the school to once again offer agricultural business degrees will hugely benefit the industry.

Northam’s Muresk Institute previously offered the degrees through Curtin University but that was withdrawn last year and they have not been offered since.

However, the State Government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Charles Sturt University to offer the degree again from 2014.

The Muresk Old Collegians Association president, John Hassel, says the local industry has a strong need for people with agribusiness degrees.

“Agribusiness is the second biggest industry in Western Australia and Australia, biggest industry in the world and it’s a really viable industry to get involved in,” he said.

“It’s well worthwhile for people considering … their tertiary studies.

“I hope it starts in 2014 and hopefully if it’s a three-year degree, they’ll be out in 2017. That’d be absolutely fantastic.”

Mr Hassel says it is a good first step towards restoring the institution.

“An MOU is only an MOU and I’d like to see some mile pegs put in place so that we can see them being reached and progress towards getting a decent number of people into tertiary agribusiness education at Muresk for 2014, because at the moment there hasn’t been a student intake in there for three years,” he said.
