Fisheries Officer

Responsible for the management, conservation and preservation of marine and freshwater resources. 

Tasks 

  • Patrol and investigate waterways to ensure that relevant laws and regulations are obeyed
  • Inspect fishing vessels, leases and processing plants to ensure compliance
  • Provide advise to industry on regulations and standards
  • Monitor activities that affect marine and freshwater habitats
  • Promote marine and freshwater management programs
  • Provide information and advice on the protection of marine and freshwater ecosystems
  • Assist research programs
  • Enforcing laws and regulations to conserve and protect fish and wildlife
  • Carrying out environmental impact assessments for a wide range of development projects

Study Pathways 

Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with a bachelor degree or higher qualification. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).
